SFP vs SFP+ vs QSFP: Transceiver Form Factors and Speeds Explained

Sfp vs sfp+ vs qsfp guide from DWC-IT

Ordering optics goes wrong more often than ordering switches. The port looks the same, the part number looks close, and the link never comes up. Understanding SFP vs SFP+ vs QSFP form factors, and the newer SFP28, QSFP28 and QSFP-DD variants, prevents most of those mistakes. This guide explains what each form factor carries, where it is used and what to check before you order.

Short answer: SFP vs SFP+ vs QSFP

SFP carries up to 1 Gb/s and is common on access-switch uplinks and older equipment. SFP+ looks identical but carries 10 Gb/s. QSFP+ is a wider, four-lane module that carries 40 Gb/s. Newer variants keep the same shapes with faster lanes: SFP28 carries 25 Gb/s, QSFP28 carries 100 Gb/s and QSFP-DD doubles the electrical lanes for 400 Gb/s.

Can you mix SFP and SFP+?

Physically, an SFP fits in an SFP+ port because they share the same size. Whether it works depends on the switch. Many SFP+ ports accept a 1G SFP and run the port at 1 Gb/s, but not all platforms support this on every port. An SFP+ module will not run at 10 Gb/s in a 1G-only SFP port. Always check the switch’s supported transceiver list for the exact port.

Breakout: one QSFP port, four lower-speed links

Because QSFP modules carry four lanes, many switches support breakout: a 40G QSFP+ port split into four 10G links, or a 100G QSFP28 port split into four 25G links, using breakout cables or optics. This is useful for connecting high-density server racks, but breakout support is platform-specific and sometimes limited to certain ports.

Beyond SFP vs SFP+ vs QSFP: reach and fiber type

Form factor is only half of the part number. The optic type determines the distance and fiber:

  • SR (short reach) uses multimode fiber for distances within a building or data center row.
  • LR (long reach) uses single-mode fiber for distances up to around 10 km.
  • ER and ZR extend single-mode reach further for campus and metro links.
  • DAC and AOC cables combine the module and cable for short in-rack and adjacent-rack links.

Both ends of a link must match in speed and optic type, and the fiber and connector (usually LC or MPO) must match the module.

Checklist before ordering optics

  1. Confirm the port type on both switches (SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP-DD).
  2. Confirm the required speed, and whether the port supports the speed you intend to run.
  3. Match the optic type to the distance and the fiber already installed.
  4. Check connector type: LC duplex for most single-lane optics, MPO for many parallel optics.
  5. Decide between OEM-branded and compatible optics. Our guide to OEM vs compatible transceivers covers the trade-offs.
  6. Order a spare or two per type for each site.

Sourcing optics with the switches

Optics are easiest to get right when they are ordered with the switches they plug into. DWC-IT supplies refurbished optical transceivers and used Cisco transceivers matched to the platforms in your order, including refurbished Arista switches and Cisco Catalyst and Nexus families.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SFP and SFP+?

They share the same physical size, but SFP carries up to 1 Gb/s and SFP+ carries 10 Gb/s. An SFP+ port often accepts a 1G SFP, while an SFP port cannot run an SFP+ module at 10 Gb/s.

Can a QSFP port connect to an SFP+ port?

Yes, in many cases, by using a QSFP-to-SFP+ adapter or a breakout cable that splits a 40G QSFP+ port into four 10G links, provided both switches support it.

Is SFP28 backward compatible with SFP+?

Many SFP28 ports accept SFP+ modules and run at 10 Gb/s, but support varies by switch. Check the platform’s transceiver compatibility list.

What does QSFP28 mean?

QSFP28 is a four-lane module with each lane running at 25 Gb/s, for a total of 100 Gb/s. It is the most common form factor for 100G data center links.
